The Golden Eagles steal one at Webster in overtime

Martin becomes all-time assits leader

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – The Golden Eagles narrowly escape with a win over the Gorloks in overtime, 81-79, to keep their win streak alive. Spalding's streak now sits at seven in a row bumping their record to 14-6 overall and 9-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spalding had their hands full with the Gorloks in the first quarter, Webster's Kaylee Heggmann would spilt free-throws to give her team a 3-7 lead. Allison Just would hit a three a few plays later to give Spalding a one-point lead 8-7 with 5:57 left to play in the first. Spalding would end the first quarter with a three-point lead off a Gahagan layup. The second quarter started with Naomi Johnson hitting a three for the Gorloks to tie the game 18-18. The Golden Eagles found themselves down by 11 in the second quarter 22-33.  After a jumper from Hunter Wright with 00:31 left to play in the first half Spalding would go into halftime down nine, 32-41.
 
- The third quarter would start with both teams missing shots, but a steal from Alex Martin with 9:07 led to a fast break layup from Tse Gahagan trimming Webster's lead to seven, 34-41. After a free-throw from Just, the third quarter would see Webster control the ball and the clock ending the quarter up six, 55-61. In the fourth, Maleah Hirn would score four answered points to cut the Gorlok lead to two, 59-61, with 8:48 left to play in regulation. With 1:20 remaining, Allison Just would spilt a pair of free-throws to put Spalding down by one. The Gorloks Hanna Cottrell would hit a go ahead three with 00:22 left to play, but Hirn answered knocking down a three from the wing to tie it, 69-69. Alex Martin would miss a three at the buzzer that would have won the game in regulation sending the game to overtime.
 
- In overtime, Spalding looked to be in control leading, 79-77 with 15 seconds remaining, but a foul on a made layup by Webster's Kaylee Hagemann sent the Gorloks to the line with a chance to cut it to one. Heggeman missed the free throw and Alex Martin looked to come down with the rebound and draw an over-the-back foul on Webter's Jaysea Morgan. However, the foul was called on Martin for falling back into Morgan sending her to the line with a chance to tie the game. Morgan converted both free throws tying the game at 79 all with 13 seconds to go. Martin came up court, dribbled left, cut back right into the lane and pulled up just beyond the block for the go-ahead layup with two ticks left on the clock. The Gorloks' Hannah Cottrell heaved a shot from just beyond half court that banked of the backboard, hit the front of the rim and bounced off and the Golden Eagles got the victory, 81-79.
 
NOTABLE STATS
- Alex Martin's eight assists made her Spalding's all-time assists leader elevating her career total to 346. Martin also added 12 points, 6 steals and 4 rebounds. Maleah Hirn scored had a team-high 17 points while also recording 5 rebounds. Tse Gahagan finished with 14 points and 4 assists, Allison Just Had 13 points and 6 rebounds, Megan Going added 11 points, and Hunter Wright scored 10.
 
- Spalding would end the game shooting 45.1% from the floor while Webster shot 41%. The Golden Eagles would record 16 steals for the game forcing 25 Webster turnovers.
 
FOR THE FOES

-Jaysea Morgan had a game high 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Addison Beussink had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
