Golden Eagles cruise to fifth straight win

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding women's basketball team extended their win streak to five with a series sweep over Eureka, 78-59, Wednesday night at Bollwinkle Arena. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 12-6 overall and stay at 7-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back and forth first quarter in which Spalding edged ahead, 19-18, on a Megan Goeing jumper in transition with four seconds to play. The Golden Eagles pulled ahead by double-digits in the second quarter behind eight points from Allison Just. Just shot 3-of-4 from the field including 2-of-2 from the three-point line helping the Golden Eagles to a 41-31 lead at the half.
 
- Eureka responded with a run in the third quarter, Ja'Keesha Hawkins led the way with eight points which saw the Red Devils outscore the Golden Eagles 17-11 in the period cutting Spalding's lead to four points heading into the final 10 minutes. Kendyl Powell had a monster fourth quarter. With SU leading by four, Powell scored six points and hauled in five rebounds over the first 3:29 of the quarter helping SU pull away to a 12-point lead and the Golden Eagles never looked back on their way to a 79-58 victory.
 
NOTABLE STATS
- Spalding had five players score in double figures. Alex Martin and Allison Just led the team with 16 points apiece. Maleah Hirn finished with 15 points, Hunter Wright scored 12 points, and Kendyl Powell finished with her second double-double in a row with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  
 
- The Golden Eagles had another dominant performance in the paint Spalding outscoring the Red Devils, 42-26. Spalding's second unit also came up big outscoring Eureka's bench, 24-10.
 
FOR THE FOES
- Ashley Harfst led Eureka with 15 points and eight rebounds, Kennedy Dura scored 12 points, and Ja'Keesha Hawkins added 10 points.

- The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday, January 26th at Iowa Wesleyan taking on the Tigers at 2:00 pm EST.
