Golden Eagles Closeout Sewanee, 8-4 and 22-4, to Sweep Series

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Golden Eagles combined for 30 runs taking two games from Sewanee, 8-4 and 22-4, to improve to 3-0 on the season.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Garrett Wilson led off the inning with a solo home run to right field to get the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard. Clay Kelly drove in Dillon Sievert for the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

  • In the top of the sixth, Kelly drove in his second RBI hitting a single to left field bringing Wilson around from second to put Spalding in front, 3-2.

  • After a pair Tiger runs in the bottom of the sixth put Spalding in a 4-3 hole, Jeff Chapuran answered with a solo homer in the top of the seventh to even the score, 4-4.

  • In the eighth, Quenton Brownlee hit fly ball to left field allowing Kelly to advance home from third for the game-winning run.

  • Spalding added three support runs in the ninth. Evan Trentman flied out to center field scoring Chapuran for the first run, and Kelly singled to left scoring Sievert and Blake Benz for the final two runs of the game.

  • GAME 1 STAT LEADERS
  • Junior Hayden Davenport (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Davenport came on to relieve starter Jack Parisi, holding Sewanee batters to no runs, on four hits, while striking out and walking one batter.

  • Clay Kelly led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Luca DeSantis (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, on five hits, while striking out one batter and walking two.

  • Tyler Dunbar led the Tiger batters going 2-for-4.

  • GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Golden Eagles lit up the scoreboard for 22 runs in game two, the first coming on a Brownlee single to third base the scoring Wilson from third.

  • Spalding's offense exploded for 17 runs over the next four innings to give the Golden Eagles a commanding, 18-3 lead. Bryce Spalding, Sievert and Wilson led the charge. Spalding and Sievert each hit three-run home runs, and Wilson added a three-run triple.

  • SU added the final three runs in the eighth, all coming on RBI singles from Evan Trentman, Cody Milliner and Jacob Reece.

  • STAT LEADERS
  • Zach Jones (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate start. The right-hander went 5.0 innings allowing three runs, on nine hits, while striking out four batters.

  • Wilson went 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead SU at the plate. Hatcher, Sievert and Spalding also added three RBI apiece.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Daniel McDonnell (0-2) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, on seven hits, while walking five batters and striking out four.

  • UP NEXT
  • The Golden Eagles host their home opener this weekend. The Golden Eagles play two games on Sunday taking on Olivet at noon EST in the Derby City Classic opener and cap the day off with nine innings against Aurora. The Golden Eagles close the Derby City Classic Monday at 6 pm EST taking on University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
