Slow Start Trips Up Golden Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Golden Eagles could not overcome a sluggish first half falling to MacMurray, 87-74, Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The loss drops Spalding's record to 8-11 on the season and 6-7 in conference, while MacMurray improved to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in SLIAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Eagles got out to a quick start getting baskets from Dominique Ellis and Robert Bendingfield on their first two possessions to take a 4-0 lead. MacMurray responded in a major way, going on an 18-0 run fueled by nine points from Kendall Davis. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 11 on a Marcus Montgomery three-pointer, but the Highlanders slowly pulled away to take a 46-29 lead into halftime. Six points from Brandon Williams helped SU outscore MacMurray 11-2 to start the second half slicing the deficit to eight points with 17:52 to play, but an 8-3 Mac spurt pushed the deficit back to 13 points. Still, the Golden Eagles would not go out without a fight cutting the lead to seven points twice. The first time on a Brendan Holt layup with 6:43 to go and again on a Williams three-pointer at the 2:51 mark. However, Spalding could complete the comeback falling, 87-74. 

  • Freshman guard Robert Bendingfield paced the Golden Eagles with a double-double scoring 18 points and passing out 10 assists. Senior Brandon Williams finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Marcus Montgomery provided 12 points off the bench, while Ellis and Holt scored 11 points apiece.

  • The most glaring statistic of the game was MacMurray's ability to score in the paint outscoring SU 58-34.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Big man Brent Long who finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds led the Highlanders, while Davis scored 21 points and Michael Cameron added 20 points.
