Golden Eagles Overcome 16-Point Deficit to Edge Webster, 61-58

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's basketball team overcame a 16-point first half deficit to edge Webster, 61-58, Saturday afternoon at Derek Smith Gymnasium. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Webster falls to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in SLIAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Golden Eagles got off to patchy start turning the ball over six times in the first 9:43 allowing the Gorloks to race out to a 22-6 lead. Spalding showed composure slowly chipping away at the deficit cutting it to two points with 1:24 to play in the half following a Brandon Williams three-pointer. Webster's Christian Crespo would match it on the Gorloks next possession and SU would head to the locker room at the half trailing 35-30. The Golden Eagles scored the first four points out of the break cutting the Gorlok lead to one on a Dominique Ellis layup in transition. However, Webster would outscore SU 13-7 over the next six minutes pushing the margin back to seven points with 11:28 to play. Another Williams three-pointer sparked a 16-4 Spalding run capped off by a Keith Wallace free throw turning a seven-point deficit into a five-point lead with 2:15 to play. Webster would trim the lead to one point with nine seconds to play, but freshman Robert Bendingfield converted a pair of free throws to secure the win for SU, 61-58.

- Dominique Ellis paced the Golden Eagle offense with 17 points. Brandon Williams fell a rebound short of double-double tallying 12 points and nine rebounds. Rylan Rowe also finished in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Freshmen point guards Cornelius Watts and Robert Bendingfield passed out four assists apiece.   

FOR THE FOES

- Josh Johnson and Michael Dunn led the Gorloks offense with 12 points apiece, while Christian Crespo added 10 points.

- The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday, January 10 taking on Blackburn College. Tipoff is 8:00 pm EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
