Golden Eagles lose second straight falling to Webster, 61-54

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team lost their second straight game falling to Webster University, 61-54, Wednesday at DSG. The loss brings the Golden Eagles record to 11-10 overall and 6-7 in the SLIAC.
 
The Golden Eagles had three players in double digits, senior Brandy Hunter lead the team with 13 points knocking down three three-pointers, while sophomore Alex Martin contributed 12 points while also dishing out five assists. Senior Maya Hardin was one rebound away from a double-double scoring 10 points and bringing down nine rebounds.
 
The first quarter was back and forth with Webster leading for the majority of the period. A three by Maya Hardin to end the first quarter gave Spalding their first lead 13-12. The Golden Eagles hit the floor running in the second quarter starting on a 12-1 run to extend their lead to 25-13 with 6:19 left in the second. A layup by Aley Lucas broke a 2:23 stretch where neither team scored cutting Spalding's lead to 10 with 3:56 remaining. Webster started to make a run of their own to end the quarter, but a three by Dee Dee Sliter ended the run giving Spalding an 11-point lead with 55 seconds to go. Webster cut the lead to nine right before the end of the half knocking down a jumper to make the score, 28-19.
 
Webster started out hot in the third quarter going on a 10-0 run to take a 29-28 lead at the 6:27 mark, but an Allison Just jumper put SU back in front, 30-29. The last 3:30 of the third quarter consisted of four ties and five lead changes. SU forged ahead when Brandy Hunter knocked down a three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a one-point lead, 41-40, heading into the fourth quarter. Spalding extended their lead to six in the forth leading, 50-44. However, Webster responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead 51-50 with 4:18 left to play and SU would never regain the lead falling, 61-54.  
 
Up next, Spalding travels to St. Louis, Missouri February 11 to take on SLIAC opponent Fontbonne University. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm EST.
