GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University women's basketball team lost to Greenville College, 77-57, Thursday night in Greenville, Ill. bringing the Golden Eagles record to 6-5 on the season and 1-3 in SLIAC play.
Senior
Brandy Hunter lead the team with 16 points, while playing 33 total minutes, while also pulling in seven rebounds. Sophomore
Alex Martin contributed 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles opened the game with a two-point jumper made by
Julie Skaggs. But after committing seven turnovers in the first quarter the Eagles fought hard to only trail 15-13.
The Golden Eagles started hot in the second quarter outscoring Greenville 16-6 in the first 4:54 of the quarter to go up 29-20. Greenville made a run late in the second quarter to make the game tight at half Spalding leading 36-35.
The third quarter was a battle much like the first half. Spalding pulled away early, going up 47-39.
Brandy Hunter contributed eight of her 16 points in the third for Spalding. However, Greenville made a comeback late in the third quarter to go up 54-53 to end the third quarter. Both teams had turnover troubles with each team tallying 11 turnovers in the period.
Despite being close over the first thirty minutes, Greenville started to pull away from Spalding outscoring the Golden Eagles 23-4 in the final period. Free throws played a big part in the loss, with Spalding only shooting 5-of-9 from the line for the game, while Greenville connected of 16-of-19 attempts.
Next, the Golden Eagles will travel to face Webster University Saturday, January 7 for a conference matchup. The game is set for 2 pm in St. Louis, Mo.
