LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team won their third consecutive game, defeating Heidelberg University, 4-2. With the win, Spalding improves to 4-2 on the season. The loss sees Heidelberg fall to 1-5 overall. James Keating (1-1) earned the win, while
Chance Brinley earned a save. Steve Huber (1-1) was tagged for the loss for Heidelberg.
Matt Harper had a solid day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI's.
Kam Bruner went 1-for-1 with three walks, a home run, and two RBI's. Evan Long went 2-for-4 with two singles for Heidelberg.
The scoring didn't start until the bottom of third inning and it opened up in a big way.
Korie Vire reached on error. He jumped the pitcher and was able to steal second to move into scoring position. With two outs, Bruner smashed the ball to deep left-center for the teams' first home-run of the 2016 season and the Golden Eagles led 2-0. After walking the next batter and then hitting the following guy, Harper doubled to left center to bring both base runners in and Spalding led, 4-0. Spalding threatened to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth by moving the runners to second and third, but were unable to bring them home. Heidelberg finally got to Keating, loading the bases in the top of the eighth with no outs. Two wild pitches put two runs on the board.
Aaron Mitchell walked his man to put runners on the corners.
Chance Brinley was brought in in relief and was able to end the threat as Spalding led, 4-2. The Golden Eagles would shut the door in the top of the ninth and walk away victorious.
Spalding will be back in action Tuesday, March 8
th when they travel to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Pioneers of Transylvania University. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown out at 4 pm EST.
