FULTON, Mo. – The Spalding University women's basketball team fell to Greenville, 70-53 Friday evening on the campus of Westminster College. The loss brings an end to the Golden Eagles season as they finish with a mark of 17-9. Greenville advances to play the winner of Westminster and Eureka Saturday night.
Alex Martin led the way for Spalding with 16 points and added six rebounds to complete her night.
Mackenzie Myers followed close behind with 10 points. The Panthers were led by Missy Deal who finished her evening with a 16 point performance.
Spalding opened the game on a 7-2 run with
Alex Martin hitting the game's first three-point basket. This quick start would not deter the Panthers, as they answered with a 6-2 spurt to close the gap to within one point at 9-8 with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The panthers would use a 6-5 advantage to tie the game at 14 with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. Jamie Schollenbruch's jumper would end the quarter and see Greenville lead, 18-16.
Greenville controlled the first four and half minutes of the quarter by erupting on a 19-3 run that was capped off by a three-pointer from Greenville's Taylor Paulin to push the lead to 37-19. A 6-0 run from the Golden Eagles would see them try to claw back into the game as they trailed 37-25 with three and a half minutes left in the first half. The panthers closed the half on a 7-2 run however, and Spalding would head into the locker room down 17 points.
The third quarter would start out fairly evenly as Spalding gained a 7-4 advantage after a
Kim Mingus jumper around the six minute mark, which saw Spalding cut the lead to 48-34. Greenville would have answer however, as they used an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 59-34 with 2:39 remaining in the quarter. Spalding closed the third out on an 8-2 run to head into the final frame trailing 61-42.
Greenville opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run before Mingus knocked down a triple from the left side to end the Panthers run. Both teams would find baskets hard to come by from there as a four minute drought stalled the offense.
Alex Martin's jumper ended the drought and cut the lead down to 20 points. Spalding would end the game with a 6-3 advantage, but it wouldn't be enough as Spalding sees their season end.
