Golden Eagles drop second straight falling to Transylvania, 70-55

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team dropped their second straight game falling, 70-55, to Transylvania University Tuesday evening at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to a 6-3 on the season.

Transylvania opened the game with a three-pointer by Taylor Jackson, leading to an 11-4 run over the first four minutes. The Golden Eagles caught back up, tying the game 11-11 at 4:10 after a steal and made layup by Julie Skaggs. The Pioneers shot 47 percent from behind the arc with eight made threes in the first half while SU struggled getting their shots to fall, shooting only 29 percent from the field. Transy held a 12-point lead over the Golden Eagles at the half.

The Pioneers increased their lead into the second half as their three-point shooting continued to be a problem for SU. Celia Kline made 5-of-8 threes in the second half, alone, and led all scorers with 23 total points. Shelby Boyle hit another three to put Transy ahead by 16. Maya Hardin cut the deficit down to nine just before the end of the third quarter with five quick points. Hardin ended the game with a season high 19 points and seven rebounds, but the Pioneers took their largest lead of the game, 22, with two minutes left to play. Lelanda Matthews scored all seven of her points in the last two minutes, cutting the deficit for SU to just 15 with a final score of 70-55.

Next, the Golden Eagles will host Hanover College on December 30. Tipoff is 7 pm at Derek Smith Gymnasium in Louisville, Ky.
