Golden Eagles fall on penalty kicks to Fontbonne in SLIAC semifinal

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University women's soccer team ended their season in a loss, decided by penalty kicks, to Fontbonne University in the semifinal of the SLIAC Championship Tournament. The game resulted in a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes of regulation, and two-ten minute periods of overtime. The Griffins outscored the Golden Eagles in penalty kicks 4-1 to advance to the SLIAC Championship game Saturday against Webster.

Although outshot 15-5 over the course of regulation, SU was the first to score in the 23rd minute. Dee Sliter scored her 21st goal of the season to take the 1-0 lead; the goal was assisted by Baylee Tabler, marking her 11th on the season. Fontbonne's goal came in the second half for Savannah Davis found the back of the net to tie score at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles attacked aggressively in overtime, earning five more shots, but both teams struggled to find the back of the net sending the game into a shootout. Fontbonne went four-for-four with shots made by Leann Smith, Daniele Caruso, Meredith Wendt, and Jacey Pate. SU scored one PK from Alnee Tutson, but was unable to recover from two missed attempts by Baylee Tabler and Shelby Lurie. SU was defeated in the shootout 4-1.

This will conclude the Golden Eagles 2016 season. SU finishes with an 11-5-2 overall record and 7-2 mark in conference play. On the season, Spalding finished ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring offense out of 433 teams with 3.29 goals per game, as well as 18th in the nation in both points per game (9.12) and assists per game (2.53). Dee Dee Sliter wrapped up the regular season at the top of the individual statistics rankings. The senior from Louisville, Ky., ranked 7th in the nation in goals per game with 1.18 per contest, as well as 10th in total goals (20/does not include postseason), 11th in game-winning goals (6), 12th in points per game (2.65) and 14th in total points (45). Baylee Tabler also had an outstanding season ranking 29th in the nation in assists per game (0.59) and 32nd in total assists with 10 on the season.
