LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team was swept in a doubleheader Friday against Anderson, falling 6-2 in game one and 9-8 in the nightcap. The losses put Spalding at 12-20 this season.
The first game started out as a pitcher's duel, as neither team crossed the plate until Anderson came through with two runs in the top of the fifth. Spalding answered with a run in the bottom half with a double from pitcher
Kelci Flener to make it 2-1, but Anderson scored four in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Eagles tallied only four hits in the game, including two from leadoff hitter
Shelby Kilgore.
The bats finally came alive in game two, but not until Anderson had built an 8-0 lead after just two innings.
Kaytlyn Mitchell brought home the first run with a long double over the head of the right fielder.
Kelci Flener scored on a wild pitch two batters later to make it 8-2 as Spalding kept chipping away. A two-RBI triple from
Becca Mouser and a bases loaded single from
Brooke Conder made it 8-5 after three full innings. After Anderson scored a run in the fourth, the Eagles crossed the plate twice more in the fifth with an RBI triple from Miranda Landanyi and a run-scoring wild pitch to make it 9-7. Mouser doubled home Kilgore in the sixth but was left stranded at third. Spalding went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
The Lady Eagles are back in action Sunday at Blackburn for a doubleheader as they finish out the regular season. The games are scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. EST.
