GREEVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University softball team lost both games of their doubleheader at Greenville, 8-7 and 10-9 Friday evening. The losses drop the Golden Eagles record to 6-14 overall and 4-4 in conference.
The Golden Eagles led 7-2 in the sixth inning, but the Panther offense erupted for six runs to win game one, 8-7.
Kelci Flener (4-6) took the loss allowing eight runs, seven earned on nine hits, while striking out 10 batters.
Kaylin Rucker led the Spalding hitters going 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while
Becca Mouser and
Kaytlyn Mitchell both went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead through 2.5 innings. In the first inning,
Becca Mouser singled to right field scoring Rucker from third, and Mitchell drove in
Shelby Kilgore with an RBI single. A
Brooke Lamon leadoff homerun in the third pushed the SU lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, a pair of homeruns by Shannon Elbe and Bryn McKie cut the Spalding lead to one run.
Spalding responded with a two run fourth and fifth inning to extend their lead to five runs at 7-2. A Rucker RBI double brought Lamon across the plate, and Kilgore singled plating
Brooke Conder. In the fifth, an error at second base allowed Mitchell to score, and Rucker pushed
Miranda Ladanyi across with an RBI single.
However, the Panther bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning plating six runs on six hits and two errors to give Greenville an 8-7 edge. Flener led off the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a Lamon ground out, but was thrown out at home following a Rucker single, and Kilgore flied out to left field to end the game.
Opposite of the first game, Greenville jumped on Spalding early taking a 10-0 lead through three innings. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to once run, but their rally fell short as
Kaylin Rucker grounded out to second base to end the game.
Robyn Schoen (2-5) was credited with the loss, allowing 10 runs, five earned on 11 hits while striking out one batter and walking two.
Alyssa McAfee led the Eagles at the plate going 3-for-4 with one RBI, while
Kaytlyn Mitchell and
Brooke Lamon each drove across a pair of runs.
Up next, the Golden Eagles will play a neutral site doubleheader Saturday against Iowa Wesleyan at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. EST at Greenville College.
