Golden Eagles lose wild one at Thomas More, 16-12

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team played a wild one at the Thomas More combining for 28 runs, 39 hits and eight errors. However, the Golden Eagles were on the losing end falling to the Saints, 16-12.

Three Golden Eagles finished with three hits. Brad Speek led the group going 3-for-5 with five RBIs, while Jacob Woodruff and Kam Bruner both went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Dan Sanders (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits, while striking out three batters and walking two.

Spalding raced to an early 5-1 lead through the first 2.5 innings. A Speek ground out to short scored Chafin, and a Korie Vire fielder's choice drove in Woodruff to put SU ahead 2-0. Thomas More scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut Spalding's lead to one run, but Speek drove in his second and third RBI of the day to stretch the Eagle lead to three runs, and Ryan Mosby homered to open the third inning to push it to four runs at 5-1.

However, the Saints bats heated up in the bottom of the third as they drove in eight runs on nine hits, and the Eagle defense gave them some help committing two errors as they found themselves trailing 9-5. Thomas More added two runs in the fourth inning to increase Spalding's deficit to six runs at 11-5.

Spalding answered with three runs in the top of the sixth. Blake Patterson led-off the inning with a homerun to left field and Speek drove in drove in Drew Beckmann and Chafin with a single through the middle to get SU within three runs at 11-8. Nevertheless, Thomas More responded with four runs in the home half of the inning to extend their lead to 15-8.

Ian Woodall doubled to right center scoring Bruner in the seventh and the Golden Eagles added three runs in the eighth, but couldn't complete the rally as they fell 16-12.

The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action this weekend when they host No. 20/25 Webster University Saturday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
