MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball team lost their final three games in Myrtle Beach 5-1 and 10-1 against Kentucky Christian, and wrapped up the day with a 12-3 loss to Frostburg State. The Eagles have lost seven straight and are now 1-7 on the season.
In the first game,
Caroline Hale batted 2-for-3 and
Becca Mouser had a single and an RBI, but the Eagles' bats were silent as they were held to four hits.
Kelci Flener pitched a complete game and allowed one earned run. Flener struck out eight batters while lowering her ERA to 2.33.
Neither team was able to come around for the first four and a half innings, but the Eagles did threaten in the second, when they loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning. After the Knights scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Spalding tied in the next inning with an RBI single from Mouser. Kentucky Christian scored four times in the bottom half to put the game away.
The second game was not as close as the Knights scored 10 straight runs to answer a Mouser RBI single in the first inning. The bats were quiet again, as the Eagles only had five hits in this game. Only two of the 10 runs were earned as Spalding was hampered by five errors.
The trip came to a close with a 12-3 loss that was called after five innings. Frostburg State scored seven runs in the second and five in the fourth to go ahead 12-0. Spalding was able to score three in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two run single by
Kelci Flener.
Spalding will host their home opener and first conference game Saturday, March 21 against MacMurray at 1:00 p.m. EST.
