LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Spalding University women's basketball team used a hot start to run away from Eureka College, clinching their second consecutive SLIAC tournament championship, 80-50. The win improves Spalding's record to 22-4 as they await the announcement of the Division 3 tournament bracket, which will be announced Monday afternoon.
Kayla Styles, named tournament MVP, lead a balanced SU attack with 18 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots.
Jessica Guy added 11 points and six rebounds. The Spalding defense was again fantastic, limiting the Red Devils to 31 percent shooting.
The Lady Eagles used a high pressure defense and an efficient offense to jump out to an 11-2 lead just four minutes into the game. With Spalding still holding on to a nine point lead,
Julie Skaggs scored five straight points to kick start a 13-0 run that put the Eagles ahead by 20 points with 8:42 remaining in the first half. Spalding coasted for the rest of the period and a
Kallie Ash three-pointer, her third of the half, gave the Eagles a 40-19 lead heading into the break.
The Red Devils scored the first point of the second half, but a 9-0 Spalding run extinguished any chance of a comeback, as Spalding led 49-20. Spalding just poured it on from there. A late 14-3 run that included seven points and an assist from
Kelly Coburn put the Eagles ahead by 40 points, their biggest lead of the game, at 72-32.
Spalding will learn their first round site when the Selection Show airs Monday at 2:30 p.m. at
