Golden Eagles drop heartbreaker in OT to Westminster, 73-72

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding women's team dropped a heart-breaker on Wednesday night to the Westminster Blue Jays 73-72 in overtime at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles fell to 3-1 and 0-1 in the SLIAC while Westminster improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
 
A Krista Armontrout layup with 15 seconds left in overtime was the game-winner as Spalding couldn't connect on a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer. Alex Martin led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and seven rebounds, 10 of her 17 coming in the third period.
 
The first period was fast paced with Spalding hitting double the amount of shots than Westminster. Both teams hit three free-throws and Spalding hit one more three than the Blue Jays and led by seven after the first.
 
The second period went to the Blue Jays where they outscored Spalding 16-11 in the period. Seven different players had a point in the period for the Blue Jays while Spalding was held to 24 percent shooting. Spalding took a 28-26 lead into the halftime break.
 
The third period was one where Alex Martin went 3-of-3 from the floor including two threes' and made both of her free throws. Westminster went on an 8-0 run to begin the period forcing Spalding to call a timeout. Martin was able to bring the Golden Eagles back and keep a two-point lead going to the fourth period.
 
The Blue Jays jumped out to an eight-point lead with 5:30 to play before the Golden Eagles stormed back to tie the game on a pair three's and couple of free throws. From that point Westminster went on a 5-0 spirt to give them a five-point lead with 1:22 to play. Three layups sandwiched around a Blue Jays free throw tied the game with 17 seconds left. Mackenzie Haddox of Westminster had a shot at the buzzer but came up short, sending the game to overtime.
 
The overtime period went back and forth with either team ever leading by more than three points. Spalding had a chance with 15 seconds left to win the game but both shots were off the mark and the Golden Eagles dropped their first game of the season.
 
Dee Dee Sliter finished the game with 14 points, nine assists and four steals. Mackenzie Myers also added 11 points and six boards. Spalding shot 35 percent, 32 percent from the three-point arc.
 
The Golden Eagles will be back in action at home on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff with Eureka College at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
