riod was all Golden Eagles as Olivia Hollander picked up two fouls for Fontbonne allowing some space down low for
Julie Skaggs to go to work. She scored six of her 12 in the period and helped stretch the Golden Eagles early second period lead from seven to 14. Spalding lead by as many as 15 in the period, but headed to the locker room with a 14-point advantage.
Dee Dee Sliter headed to the trainers room in the second period as she looked to tweak her right knee for which she sat out of a game last Saturday. She was able to return in the second half and play the entirety.
The Griffins won the third period as they cut the Golden Eagles lead to three with under five minutes to play in the period. Spalding was able keep the three-point lead as they headed to the final 10 minutes of play.
The fourth period went back-and-forth as Fontbonne took a 51-50 lead, their first lead since 13-12 in the first period. Spalding was able to battle back and hit some big shots and free throws down the stretch. Sliter, who entered the game 11-of-11 from the free throw line was only able to hit 4-of-8 on Saturday but it was enough for the win.
Alex Martin iced the game away with a free throw with three seconds to make it a five point game, just her third point. The freshman guard was 0-of-7 from the field and 3-of-8 from the charity stripe in a game that was unlike her.
The Golden Eagles will look to continue their great play to begin the season on Tuesday, December 15 at 6:00 p.m. versus Saint Mary of the Woods College at Derek Smith Gymnasium.Â
