LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding volleyball team fell in their final two matches of the season on Saturday in a Tri-Match held at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
In the opening contest in the morning, the Golden Eagles lost to the Webster Gorlocks in four sets, ending their chances of making the postseason. In the night cap, Spalding dropped their final game of the season to Indiana University South East, also in four sets.
Webster and Spalding went back and fourth throughout all four sets. The Gorlocks took the first set 25-22 while the Golden Eagles secured the second set 25-23. Webster would bounce back to take the third set 25-22. The fourth set went extra points as Webster and Spalding went back and fourth on points past 25. The Gorlocks would eventually secure a 29-27 fourth set victory and the match, ending the Golden Eagles chances at postseason play.
Cayla Hoehler led Spalding in kills with 14 and
Kaitlin Hall had a match-high and new career-high 52 assists.
Victoria Heitzman fell three kills short of her third straight double-double as she added 13 digs and seven kills.
In the second match of the day against IUS the Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick one set lead with a 25-17 victory in the opening frame. From there IUS took over, winning the next three sets 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23. Spalding kept it close throughout but a few miscues would end up costing the Golden Eagles.
Jessica Diehl led in kills with 14 and
Victoria Heitzman added 11 and 13 digs for her team-leading 14th double-double of the season.
The Golden Eagles season comes to an end with a 11-19 record and a 10-8 in conference play.
