LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding men's soccer team won their second consecutive match as they defeated Blackburn, 5-1, Saturday on Senior Day at Champions Trace.
The win improves their record to 9-8-0 and 6-2-0 in SLIAC competition while the Beavers fell to 5-10-2 and 1-6-0 in conference play. Spalding currently sits in third place in the SLIAC standings with one week remaining.
Spalding took an early, 1-0, advantage with a goal by
Sergio Olvera-Vancini, assisted by
Zach Fonda. The rest of the first half went scoreless, but the Golden Eagles outshot the Beavers 8-2 in the opening half.
Blackburn bounced back six minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal by Steven Njuba, tying the game at one. Two minutes later Spalding answered with a goal of their own off the foot of
Tenko Kono, assisted by senior
Julio DeLeon, taking a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
In the 58th minute
Jacob McMurry scored an unassisted goal to make the score, 3-0. The Golden Eagles would add a goal by DeLeon and
Erfan Rezai late in the second half to complete the victory, 5-0.
Senior
Aaron Seneker started the game in goal for Spalding and played 17 minutes without recording a save or allowing a goal. Senior
Logan Spencer played the rest of the game between the posts and saved one shot and allowed one goal.
Spalding has one game remaining at Westminster College on Saturday, October 31. The game time is TBA.
