ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding men's basketball suffered their second straight defeat, this time at the hands of Fontbonne, 62-56. The Eagles fell to 14-7 overall and 11-3 during conference play. Fontbonne improves to 6-5 in the SLIAC, 7-11 overall.
Brandon Goeing led the way with 19 points, while
Brandon Gabriel added 16 points (7-15 FG) and four assists. Spalding pulled down 12 offensive rebounds but missed 12 of their 26 free throws.
Spalding struggled offensively to start the game, scoring just one field goal in the game's first seven minutes falling behind 8-2. The Eagles fought back, reeling off a 10-2 run, taking their first lead of the game at 12-10 midway through the first half. The Griffins countered with a 12-3 run for a 22-15 lead and never trailed again. A Goeing layup trimmed the lead to two points, but Spalding went into the break trailing by seven.
James Turner opened the second half with a layup to cut it to five, but a 10-4 run gave the Griffins an 11 point lead. The Golden Eagles fought back, six straight points by Javonte Lavender cut the Griffins lead to four with less than three minutes left at 56-52, but the Eagles would get no closer the rest of the way.
Spalding returns home next week with a game against second place MacMurray Saturday, February 7 at Derek Smith Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m. EST.
