LOUISVILLE, Ky . – Renaldo "Bud" Moore scored on a layup as time expired as the Spalding men's basketball team defeated Greenville College, 72-70. Spalding improves to 12-5 on the season and 9-1 in the SLIAC. Greenville fell to 9-7 and 6-3.
The Eagles were led by
Brandon Goeing's 27 points (9-18 FG); 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Brandon Gabriel added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Moore netted 13 points and 7 boards.
The game was tight throughout the first half, with the lead changing hands five times in the first four minutes. After the Panthers opened a five point lead at 17-12, Spalding ripped off 12 straight points. Back-to-back triples by Goeing and
James Turner gave Spalding a 24-17 lead, their largest of the game to that point. Greenville countered with a 9-0 run of their own to edge back ahead 26-24. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, and Spalding took a four point lead into the break.
Spalding came out energetic in the second half, using a high-pressure defense to force turnovers and create a little bit of separation. Three straight baskets by
Jovante Lavender capped a 12-2 Eagles run and gave them a 63-50 lead with just over seven minutes left. An old-fashioned three-point-play by Moore gave Spalding a 68-56 lead with just under three minutes remaining. However, the pesky Panthers would not go away, reeling off a 14-2 run, includindg the last eight by Ron Harris to tie the game at 70 apiece with seven seconds remaining.
Brandon Gabriel calmly dribbled up the floor and along with Moore used a pick-and-roll to perfection, finding Moore wide open under the basket. The ball left his hands just before the buzzer sounded for the final margin.
Spalding hits the road now, playing the first of four consecutive away games Saturday, January 24th at Blackburn at 4:00 p.m. EST.
