Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding University dropped a heartbreak match versus St. Catharine in five sets, 3-2, after leading two sets to none on Thursday at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
Spalding came out a little down in the first set falling behind by seven points, 18-11, but were able to climb back and take the 22-21 lead. Both teams went back and forth before Freshman
Jordan Alvey scored back-to-back points on kills assisted by Junior
Katelyn Cosgrove to win the set for Spalding 26-24.
Spalding used the momentum from the first set and brought it into the second taking an 11-5 lead early, before the Patriots stormed backed to tie the set 14 all. Both teams went on a run of five points each, before Spalding ended the set on a three point run, winning the set 25-23.
Leading two sets to none, the Golden Eagles went into the third set fired up. The third set went back and forth with St. Catharine taking the 22-19 lead, before Spalding was able to tie the game at 22. From that point, the Patriots scored three straight points to take the set 25-22 and remain in the match.
The last two sets also went the Patriots way, taking the 4
th set 25-19, and the 5
th set 15-8. Golden Eagle errors led to multiple Patriot points in the last two sets, leading to the match victory. The loss moves Spalding to 1-9 on the season with a match against Franklin College on Tuesday, in Franklin, Indiana.
