Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s soccer comes up short on Senior Day

LOUISVILLE – The Spalding University women's soccer team came up short on Senior Day falling to Fontbonne, 1-0. With the loss the Golden Eagles fall to 6-9 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play dropping them to fifth in the SLIAC standings.

Neither team could get much going early on offense, resulting in an eleven minute stretch where neither team attempted a shot. The Griffin's Kayla Thorpe broke the drought slotting the game-winner at the 20:32 mark in the first half. Spalding's Baylee Tabler had an opportunity to tie the game in the 38th minute, but the Fontbonne keeper prevented the goal sending SU to halftime trailing 1-0.

Spalding picked up their attack in the second half getting a shot on goal just 2:39 into the period. The Golden Eagles best opportunity to tie the game came in the 76th minute when Katie Ballard fired a shot toward the goal, but a Griffin defender made a sliding save to keep it from finding the back of the net.  Two minutes later, SLIAC goals leader Dee Dee Sliter had a chance to even it up, but Sliter's attempt was corralled by the keeper.

Despite the loss, Spalding controlled possession much of the game outshooting Fontbonne 11-9 for the game, while holding a 5-4 corner kick advantage.

The Golden Eagles will take to the road for their final two contests of the regular season.  SU's postseason fate will most likely be decided when they return to action at Principia Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
