Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles cruise to a 6-0 win over MacMurray

The Spalding University men's soccer team earned a road victory over MacMurray College, 6-0. The Golden Eagles were able to break the game open with two goals in the first half and added an additional four goals in the second half for the final margin. Aden Abdirahman and Jacob McMurry each scored two goals. Trevor Bruner and Justin Toller also scored for the Golden Eagles. Julio De Leon tallied three assists in the match and Joey Lesher and Abdullahi Abdullahi recorded one assist each.

After having two chances early in the match that he was not able to put away, the third time was a charm for Bruner as he was able to put away the game's first goal in the 24th minute off a feed from De Leon. The play started with a dropkick from the foot of Spalding goalkeeper Mike Salamon that was won in the air by Bruner. The headed ball found the foot of Abdirahman who was able to find Abdullahi in space. Eventually the ball found its way back to Bruner near the top of the 18-yard box. Bruner and De Leon were able to combine resulting in an easy finish for Bruner and a 1-0 lead for the Golden Eagles.

Just a short time later, in the 30th minute, another sequence of excellent possession led to the Golden Eagles second goal of the match. From the center of the park, Austin Lanham was able to work the ball ahead to Toller who spotted Abdullahi running down the right flank. Abdullahi was able to get to the baseline and then cut the ball back to a waiting Toller who was able to slot the ball home from about six yards out. Spalding took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Immediately after the start of the second half, the Golden Eagles put the game out of reach with two quick goals. In the 47th minute Joey Lesher fed De Leon who was able to find Abdirahman on his left. Abdirahman smashed home his shot from just inside of the 18-yard box, increasing the lead to 3-0. Just four minutes later, Abdikadir Hussein earned a corner kick for the Golden Eagles after he put relentless pressure on the MacMurray defense. Joey Lesher swung in the ensuing corner kick that ultimately found the right boot of Abdirahman who rifled a one-time half volley into the back of the net. Spalding's lead increased to 4-0 and the Golden Eagles were on cruise control at this point of the game.

In the 65th minute, McMurry added his name to the tally list when he was able to finish with composure after being put in behind the MacMurray defense by De Leon. McMurry would add another goal in the 68th on a free kick from right outside of the 18-yard box. McMurry's two goals increased the lead to 6-0, which ended up being the final result.

The Spalding defense posted their sixth shutout of the year. Salamon, Aaron Seneker, and Logan Spencer all contributed to the clean sheet in goal. Abdirahman now leads the SLIAC in goals scored with 8 and De Leon leads the SLIAC in assists with 8. Abdirahman and De Leon are also the top two point scorers in the SLIAC as well with 18 and 16 respectively.

The Golden Eagles improved their record on the season to 8-5-0, 2-2-0. The Spalding University men's soccer team will host their next three games beginning with a matchup against Westminister College on Saturday, October 18 at Champions Trace. Kickoff is set for 2 PM EST.
