Victoria Heitzman tallied 12 kills and 13 digs to lead the Spalding University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20) victory over MacMurray College, earning the Golden Eagles their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win of the season.
Spalding, 5-6, hit .168, with 41 kills, seven aces and 2.5 blocks. Mac, 2-10, hit .190, with 27 kills and two aces. Bri Phol led the Highlander attack with 8 kills. The Golden Eagles received strong performances from
April Fisher,
Brittany Farnsley, and
Katelyn Cosgrove who added eight kills apiece.
Spalding jumped to an early 7-4 lead in the first set on a
Katelyn Cosgrove ace. Mac fought back getting within one point at 12-11, then knotting the score at 19-19 later in the set. But the SU attack was too strong as the Golden Eagles closed the first set 25-23.
SU and Mac played to a 9-9 tie to start the second set, but Spalding outscored Mac 10-2 to go ahead 19-11 on their way to a 25-18 victory to take a 2-0 lead.
Spalding found themselves trailing 12-11 after leading 9-5 earlier in the third set. But SU clawed their way back to take the set 25-20 to secure the sweep.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday, September 25 as they travel to Franklin College to take on the Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m., ET.
