Volleyball Sweeps Iowa Wesleyan College 3-0

The Spalding University volleyball team kept their post season hopes alive with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-21) sweep of Iowa Wesleyan Friday night.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 5-0 to begin the first set, but battled back tying the score 13-13 on a block by Victoria Heitzman and Sarah Thompson. SU went on to outscore the Tigers 12-6, winning the set on an Erin Downs kill.

Spalding jumped out to a 10-5 lead to begin the second set and never looked back as they coasted to a 25-15 victory to take a 2-0 lead.

A Katelyn Cosgrove kill, followed by a Victoria Heitzman service ace set the tone to start the third set as SU led wire to wire winning the final set 25-21.

Junior setter Katelyn Cosgrove had a double-double to pace the Golden Eagle attack. Cosgrove tallied a team-high 11 kills, while passing out 17 assists.

Freshman libero Kaylee McCartney led the defense with nine digs, while Sarah Thompson controlled the net with 1.5 blocks.

With the win SU improves to 16-11 and 10-6 in the SLIAC, putting the Golden Eagles one game behind Westminster for the fourth spot in the SLIAC Tournament.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, November 2 as they conclude the regular season with a doubleheader against Fontbonne University and MacMurray College. SU will take on Fontbonne at 11:00 a.m., ET, followed by MacMurray at 1:00 p.m., ET.
