COVID-19 - Fall Sports FAQ

On August 21, the SLIAC and Spalding University announced the postponement of all fall sports against OUTSIDE competition until the spring 2021 season. Below are answers to anticipated questions and concerns. We will update this page as we receive more FAQs.

What sports will be able to compete during the fall season?
In conjunction with SLIAC, Spalding men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer and volleyball will not compete against OUTSIDE competition in the traditional fall sports season. It has been determined that soccer and volleyball programs will flip their regular and nontraditional season and operate on a timeline similar to baseball and softball that annually have a nontraditional (fall ball) season during the fall and play their regular season in the spring. In addition, baseball and softball will also not compete against OUTSIDE competition during the fall.

What will be permitted during the fall season?
Teams will still be able to participate in practice, intrasquad scrimmages, strength and conditioning and team activities. However, teams will not be permitted to practice or scrimmage against OUTSIDE competition.

Will Cross Country and Women's Golf Conference Championships be moved to the spring?
Neither have yet to be determined. President's and Athletic Director's will meet in the coming weeks to discuss the options regarding cross country and women's golf.

Will winter sports compete at all in 2020-21?
Winter sports schedules currently remain unchanged but will be evaluated as we approach the planned October 15 start date.

What impact would only being able to practice or play a limited number of games have on my eligibility with the NCAA?
The NCAA issued a blanket waiver on July 9, providing guidance regarding eligibility concerns for teams who play a limited number of contests, or whose seasons end prematurely. The blanket waiver states that student-athletes will not be charged with participation for the 2020-21 season if their team can complete only 50% or less of the sport's maximum contests/dates of competition due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NCAA also approved a second blanket waiver which permits student-athletes to receive a two-semester/three-quarter extension of eligibility if the student-athlete is unable to participate in their sport during the 2020-21 academic year due to the impact of COVID-19 or if the student-athlete's team completed 50% or less of the sport's maximum contests/dates of competition due to COVID-19. For more information on these blanket waivers, please see the NCAA press release.

Has the NCAA announced any changes to the 2020-21 sports seasons?
As of August 21, 2020, the NCAA has canceled 2020 fall championships. There has been no ruling in regard to 2020-21 winter championships.

Will student-athletes have access to the services and support such as athletic training and strength and conditioning?
Yes.
