CINCINNATI, Ohio – On Wednesday, Spalding men's lacrosse traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio. They faced Mount St. Joseph and took their first HCLC win in program history, 12-10.
Spalding moved to 2-11 (1-3 HCLC), while Mount St. Joseph fell to 0-12 (0-4 HCLC).
TURNING POINT
It was a quick start for the Golden Eagles as
Xzayvyon Isom scored just a minute into the game. The Lions struck back quickly, taking the lead with two quick goals, 2-1. With four minutes remaining, Isom and
Nicolas Guzman stepped up, and each tallied goals for SU, making it 3-2. This was a back-and-forth battle as the Lions grabbed two of their own. Mount St. Joseph took the lead at the end of the first, 4-3.
The second quarter began with a quick goal by the Lions. As three minutes rolled by,
Jackson Smith tallied his first goal, making it 5-4. At this moment, the game felt like a ping-pong game as it continued to go back-and-forth. With 11 minutes remaining in the second, the Lions grabbed another goal, making it 6-4. The Golden Eagles fought right back into this one, as Guzman netted two more (giving him a hattrick), and
Hank Ohlen snagged one of his own. This pushed SU ahead 7-6. With two minutes remaining, the Lions tallied another goal, tying the game. SU gained huge momentum before the half as Ohlen netted his second goal of the game. Spalding took the lead before the half, 8-7.
It was a slow start to the second half. It took nearly seven minutes for anyone to score a goal. The Lions grabbed a goal with eight minutes left to tie the game at eight a piece. Just a minute later, SU grabbed control of the game again.
Logan Reihing and Isom (a hat trick goal) netted one each to give SU a two-goal advantage. The Lions tallied a goal to end the third quarter, SU leading 10-9.
Just 13 seconds into the fourth quarter, Ohlen netted his second goal of the game. At this moment, SU could see their first HCLC victory within reach. Guzman netted his fourth goal as the clock ticked, giving Spalding a 12-9 advantage with four minutes left. The Lions tallied another goal, but it wasn't enough. SU took the win, 12-10.
