Grenadiers Too Much for Golden Eagles

The Spalding University Volleyball teams opened up their 2011 home schedule with Indiana University Southeast.  The Grenadiers are a common opponent for Spalding playing them twice each of the last 2 years.  Spalding has not fared well the past 2 seasons carrying a 1-3 record against IUSE losing 2 of 2 last season.

The first game of the match had Spalding controlling the entire set leading at one point 20-12.  However, the Grenadiers would not give up, going on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 22-22.  The comeback was too much for the Golden Eagles and IUS took the first set 25-23.

The second game went quite a bit different for both sides going back and forth until the final point.  Neither team led by more than 2 points the entire set until Spalding won the final point winning 25-22.  Spalding took that momentum into the 3rd set winning it 25-17.

The 4th game started with IUS dominating the Golden Eagles up 21-13.  Spalding started their own comeback going on a 7-2 run getting the score to 23-20.  The comeback fell a little short and the Grenadiers won the 4th game forcing the 15 point game 5.  Game 5 was a 2 sided affair and Spalding had a lead at 11-10.  IUS didn’t give in and fought back to a 15-12 victory.

Spalding suffers a tough loss against their crosstown rival and now has lost 6 straight.  The Golden Eagles are back in action this Saturday at home with the SLIAC quad match.  They play at 4:00pm and 6:00pm.
