Spalding Women’s Golf Show Improvement In Fall Season
The Spalding women’s golf team wrapped up the fall portion of their season this past weekend with tournaments at Centre College and Franklin University. In only their second year of existence, the team showed dramatic improvement from their performances of a year ago.
On Saturday, the team competed at Danville Country Club in the Centre College Invitational. Sophomore Samantha Ford led the way as the Golden Eagles accumulated a team score of 425, which was 31 shots better than their score on the same course a year ago. On Sunday in the Franklin Invitational, sophomore Casey Dowden finished as the team’s low scorer on the difficult Legends of Indiana golf course. Once again, the team improved significantly from their performance in 2010, lowering their team score by 36 strokes.
Coach Charlie Just was optimistic with the results that he observed during the fall season. “In a year’s time, we have become a much better and more consistent golf team than we were last fall,” he commented. “While we are still not anywhere near where we would like to be, I think that it is very important to note that our young ladies improved greatly from 2010 on every course that we played. We sometimes didn’t score as well as we should have, but we also didn’t let things fall apart completely like we did at times last year. Our players tend to get discouraged at times with their scores and expect to see dramatic improvement overnight, but that’s just not how golf works. It is such a mental game, and they are beginning to understand how important focus is on every shot. The encouraging thing is that all 6 of our golfers are just sophomores and there is lots of room for continued improvement from each of them if they work hard at their games. Hopefully we will continue to see progress in the spring season!”
