Spalding Wins Nailbiter vs. Transy, 62-58
For the Spalding University women’s basketball team, taking on opponent Transylvania University does not usually have a positive outcome. This year was a different story as the Golden Eagles defeated the Pioneers for the first time in school history.
Spalding held on to the lead despite the Pioneers 2nd half comeback as they defeated Transy 72-68 in the season opener for both teams this season.
The Golden Eagles and Pioneers battled evenly throughout the contest. Spalding’s 10-point advantage, 53-43, with 13 minutes to play would the largest lead for either team.
Transy’s comeback late in the 2nd half put some pressure on the Golden Eagles as they tied the game 64-64 with 4 minutes to paly and then took the lead 67-64 with 2:15 left. However, Spalding outscored Transy 8-1 to close out the game and clinch the victory.
Kelly Harrod, a senior from Bullitt East HS, led the Golden Eagles with 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists. Seniors, Melinda Leavell and Tesha Wright had 12 and 14 point games respectively. Both teams spent a lot of time at the free throw line with the Pioneers making 22 of 37 while the Golden Eagles were 19 of 28.
Head Coach Charlie Just commented on the victory saying, “this was a great win for our young–ladies. We had a lot of players step up and hit big shots in the 2nd half.”
Spalding is back in action next Tuesday as they host Franklin College in their season opener. Game time is 7pm.
