Lady Golden Eagles Fall to Westminster 57-46

The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Westminster 46-57 today at Derek Smith Gymnasium. Spalding was led by in scoring by Tesha Wright’s 13 points. The Golden Eagles also received an outstanding performance from freshman Jessica Guy who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was evident early that Spalding was having trouble breaking Westminster’s full court press that forced the Golden Eagles into 28 turnovers for the game.    

Spalding jumped on the scoreboard first with a 3 pointer by Melinda Leavell.  Westminster battled back taking the lead 13-8 at the 13:53 mark in the first half. At the 12:30 mark Westminster had an 18-8 lead, but the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 18-12 with 10:36 left in the first with 2 free throws by Jessica Guy and a layup by Melinda Leavell. A Megan Davis layup with 6 minutes left in the first half cut the Westminster lead to 4 at 22-18. Westminster pushed the lead back to 7 at 25-18 with a 3 point play by Leigh Ann Lutz. Spalding cut the deficit to 7 at 27-20 before the half on a jumper by Lindsey Roarx. Melinda Leavell Led Spalding at the half with 7 points on 3 for 6 shooting from the field.

Westminster struck first in the 2nd half with a layup by Liz Klaffenbach to extend their lead to 29-20, but Spalding was quick to respond with a 3 point play by Jessica Guy to cut the Westminster lead to 6. Spalding cut the lead to 4 on a Tesha Wright layup, but Westminster went on a 4-0 run to push their lead back to 8. A 3 pointer by Kerstin Hayes cut the Westminster lead to 2 at the 15 minute mark of the second half. An 8-0 run by Westminster increased their lead to 41-31 with 12:30 left to play. A basket by Jessica Guy cut the Wesminster lead to 4 with 10:44 left to play, but a quick layup for Kleffenbach pushed the lead back to 6. Westminster increased their lead to 10 until a Megan Davis driving layup cut the deficit to 8 with 7:31 left to play. The Lady Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 4 with 6:35 left in the second half, but that’s as close as they would get in this one falling 57-46.
