Bruner, Trombley Lead Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Start

The Spalding men’s soccer team defeated NAIA opponent Culver Stockton College 1-0 on the road this Thursday in Canton, MO.  The Golden Eagles got on the board halfway through the second half to record their first shutout of the season.  Trevor Bruner netted his only shot on goal in the 61st minute and the Golden Eagles held on for the shutout.

The first half was dominated by the Wildcats, who had many good scoring opportunities within the first 10 minutes.  Spalding goalkeeper, Andrew Trombley, made two tremendous saves early that gave the Golden Eagles momentum going into the 2nd half.

Spalding was a different team at the beginning of the second half with the wind at their back.  They started generating more scoring opportunities and got on the board in the 61st minute on a nice strike by Trevor Bruner from Kwame Kyei.

Head Coach Kevin Cromwell commented on todays win stating, “This was a nice way to start the 2011 season.  Our guys played a good hard fought battle against a quality opponent and came out on top.  However, we still have a lot of work to do and I am excited about our future.”

The Golden Eagles finished the game with 9 shots including 4 on goal.  The Wildcats had 8 shots with 3 on goal.  Spalding’s Andrew Trombley finished with 4 saves and his 1st shutout of the season.
