Offensive Explosion Keeps Spalding Perfect
The Spalding University baseball team faced off against Westminster in a doubleheader on Sunday and defeated the Blue Jays in both games. The Golden Eagles took game 1 17-2 as they went on tear from behind the plate with 18 hits. Zane Wheatley lead the way going 3-4 with 6 RBI and hitting his 2nd homerun of the season. Jordan Messex chipped in with 3 RBI in a 1-3 performance from the plate. Tyler Brown was the winning pitcher as he pitched 4.0 solid innings allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 1.
In game 2, Spalding fell behind early when Westminster scored 2 in the top of the 4th. However, Westminster didn’t hold the lead for long as the Golden Eagles turned in yet another big inning in the bottom of the 4th, scoring 5 runs to take control of the game. Spalding would add 2 more in the 5th and the 6th and closed out the series with a 9-2 win. Zane Wheatley continued his hot hitting driving in 2 more RBI in a 1-3 performance. Jake Wardrip got his 5th win of the season as he allowed only 3 hits while striking out 6 in 6 innings of work.
With the sweep, Spalding is now on a 6 game winning streak and improved their record to 16-7 on the season, including a perfect record in SLIAC play. Next up for the Golden Eagles will be another home doubleheader as they welcome in Blackburn on April 16th. Game 1 is scheduled for a 1pm start.
