Lady Golden Eagles Fall to Lindenwood-Belleville 61-50
The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Lindenwood-Belleville 61-50 Wednesday night. The Lady Golden Eagles took 3 point lead to the locker room at halftime, but could not overcome poor shooting in the second half. Jessica Guy led the Lady Golden Eagles with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Lindenwood-Belleville scored on the first possession of the game, but Jessica Guy answered for Spalding to even it up at 2 apiece. Both teams went shot for shot knotting the game at six, but two jumpers from Tesha Wright put the Lady Golden Eagles up 10-6 at the 16:35 mark in the first half. Kerstin Hayes hit a three pointer from the wing extending Spalding’s lead to 7 at 13-6. Megan Davis converted a pair of free throws to push Spalding’s lead to 9, but the Lynx responded with a 6 point run getting them within 3 with 11:19 to play in the first half. With the score deadlocked at 15-12, Melinda Leavell knocked down a three pointer from the corner to put Spalding up 18-12, but Lindenwood’s Blake Buchanan matched it on the other end to make it 18-15. Lindenwood cut Spalding’s lead to 1. LaQuisha Boyd made a shot under the basket to put Spalding up 3, but Buchanan hit a three pointer to tie the game 20-20 with 5:42 left in the first. Jessica Guy grabbed an offensive rebound, and put it in to regain a 22-20 lead for the Lady Golden Eagles. After a defensive stop, Kerstin Hayes made a runner in the lane to put Spalding up 24-20 with 3:22 to play. Kerstin Hayes stole the ball at the top of the key, and took it coast to coast for a layup pushing Spalding’s lead to 6 at the 1:55 mark. Lindenwood responded with a 3-0 run to end the half. The Lady Golden Eagles went to the locker room leading 26-23. Jessica Guy led Spalding in the first half scoring 8 points, and grabbing 5 rebounds.
Lindnwood’s Burnadette Brown sparked a 5-0 Lynx run to start the second half. Spalding trailed 28-26 when Megan Davis knocked down a jumper with two seconds remaining on the shot clock to tie the game. Lindenwood regained the lead with a jumper by Chanase Washington, but back to back three pointers by Kerstin Hayes and Megan Davis put Spalding up 34-30. A Lindenwood jumper got the Lynx within 2, but Jessica Guy converted 1 of 2 free throws to make it 35-32 Spalding. Lindenwood’s Asley Will hit a jumper under the basket cut Spalding’s lead to 1, but Megan Davis made a runner in the lane pushing Spalding’s lead back to 3. Burnadette Brown hit a jumper to get Lindenwood back within 1, but once again Megan Davis answered for the Golden Eagles knocking down a jumper in the lane. Lindenwood ran off 10 unanswered points to take a 46-39 lead with 8:32 left in the second half. Megan Davis hit a much needed jumper just inside the arc to get Spalding within 5 at 46-41. Taylor James knocked down a three extending Lindenwood’s lead to 8, but Jessica Guy answered on the other end getting the Lady Golden Eagles back within 6. Taylor James knocked down a three pointer giving the Lynx a 9 point cushion 5:43 left to play. Jessica converted 1 of 2 free throws to get Spalding within 8 at 52-44 with 5:08 left in regulation. Tesha Wright made a free throw to get Spalding within 7 at 52-45. Megan Clark converted off an offensive rebound to put the Lynx up 9, but Jessica Guy answered on the other end with a jumper in the lane getting Spalding’s deficit to 7. Lindenwood outscored Spalding 9-5 over the remainder of the game to get the victory over the Lady Golden Eagles 61-50.
Saturday will be senior day, and the final home games for Spalding Basketball this year. The Lady Golden Eagles will take on Webster College at 1:00 pm, followed by Men’s Basketball at 3:00 pm.
