Five Score in Double Figures Lifting Spalding Over Blackburn

Men’s Basketball dominated Blackburn College Thursday night, beating the Beavers 84-52. The Golden Eagles had a balanced performance on offense with five players scoring in double figures, led by Tyler St. Julian’s 14 points and 5 rebounds. Spalding did a great job on defense forcing 8 steals, and on the boards outrebounding Blackburn 43-27.

Brasher put Spalding up 2-0 with a nice hook shot in the lane. Blackburn’s Sean Stochl tied the game at 2-2 with a mid range jumper. Two Brasher free throws started a 6-0 Spalding run, giving the Golden Eagles an 8-2 lead. The Beavers responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 9-8 lead.  The Golden Eagles regained 10-9 lead on a Brasher jumper in the lane. Montray Robertson gave Spalding a 19-17 lead with a hook in lane with 10:11 left in the first half. Thomas Blakemore made 1 of 2 from the free throw line extending Spalding’s lead to 3 with 9:10 to play in the first. Brandon Roberts made three free throws for Blackburn to tie the game at 20. Spalding fought back running off 13 straight points to take a 33-20 lead with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Tyler St. Julian sparked the run when he nailed a contested three pointer from the corner with the shot clock winding down.  Blackburn stopped the run with a jumper by Brandon Roberts cutting Spalding’s lead to 11 at 33-22. Tyler St. Julian stretched Spalding’s lead to 13 with a put back in the lane.  Chris McDonald kept the momentum going pushing Spalding’s lead to 15 at 37-22 with a baseline jumper with 1:17 left in the first half. Sangester’s hit a baseline runner sending Spalding to the locker room with a 39-22 lead at the half. Tyler St. Julian had a solid first half scoring 10 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.

Chris McDonald got Spalding started in the second half with a nice layup and foul in transition, putting the Golden Eagles up 42-22. Blackburn’s Brandon Adams hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull the Beavers within 19, but Brasher hit two free throws on the other end to put Spalding up 21 at 44-23. Blackburn cut their deficit to 19, but a turnaround jumper in the lane by Brasher stretched the Golden Eagle lead to 21. Blackburn went on a 3-0 run cutting Spalding’s lead to 18, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 14-0 run taking a 60-28 lead with 12:43. Blackburn would go on a 6 point run cutting Spalding’s lead to 26, but that’s as close as they would get as Spalding sailed to an 84-52 victory over the Beavers. The Golden Eagles next home game is Saturday January 21st at 8:00pm against Greenville College.

Leavell Lifts Golden Eagles Past Blackburn

The Lady Golden Eagles breezed past Blackburn College 78-47 Thursday night. Spalding’s defense overwhelmed Blackburn from the beginning forcing the Beavers into 24 turnovers. Melinda Leavell led Spalding scorers with 27 points.

Blackburn scored first on a driving layup by Brina Rae taking a 2-0 lead. Tesha Wright scored Spalding’s first points, tying the game 2. Megan Davis hit two free throws giving the Lady Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead. Kirsten Hayes increased Spalding’s lead to 5, hitting a three pointer from corner at the 16:54 mark in the first half. Spalding increased their lead to 10 with a floater by Tesha Wright, and a Melinda Leavell three pointer from the wing. Blackburn responded with a 7-0 run making the score 12-9, but Tesha Wright hit a pull jumper in the lane to put Spalding back up 14-9. The Lady Golden Eagles forced two quick turnovers, resulting in layups by Wright and Kristen Baker, giving Spalding an 18-9 lead with 9:47 to play in the first. After a defensive stop, Leavell hit a deep three pushing Spalding’s lead to 12. Spalding pushed their lead to 14 on two technical free throws by Leavell. Blackburn made it 23-11 on a jumper in the lane, but Lindsey Roarx hit runner extending Spalding’s lead back to 14. Two Blackburn free throws made it 25-13 with 7:24 to play in the first. Spalding went on an impressive 19-4 to end the half. The run was fueled by a five Leavell three pointers. Spalding led 44-17 at halftime. Melinda Leavell had a monster first half, knocking down 7 of 11 three pointers, and scoring 23 points.

Jessica kept things going in the second half, knocking down a jumper on Spalding’s first possession in the second half making the score 46-16. Blackburn went on a 5-2, but it was overshadowed by a technical foul resulting in two free throws for Spalding. Jessica Guy made jumper on Spalding’s next possession putting Spalding up 52-21 with 16:32 left to play. Blackburn wouldn’t get within 30 the rest of the game. The Lady Golden Eagles next home game is Saturday January 21st against Greenville College at 1:00pm.

Men’s Basketball Beats Fontbonne 64-61

The Golden Eagles won a 64-61 thriller over Fontbonne Tuesday night. Spalding had four players score in double figures. Jametrius Brasher and Thomas Blakemore both recorded double-doubles. Brasher finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Blakemore had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Fontbonne jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before a Jametrius Brasher got Spalding on the board with a jumper to make it 4-2. Spalding tied the game on their next possession when Chris McDonald knocked down two free throws. Spalding took a 5-4 lead on a Brasher free throw, but Fontbonne hit a three pointer retaking the lead 7-5. Dominque Sangester put Spalding up 8-7 with a deep three from the wing.  Fontbonne answered with a jumper in the lane, but a Brasher put back on Spalding’s next possession retook the lead 10-9. Fontbonne went on a 6-2 run leading 16-12 with 11:15 left in the first half. A Thomas Blakemore layup fueled a quick 9-0 Spalding run giving the Golden Eagles a 21-16 lead at the 9:43 mark in the first half. Fontbonne responded with a 5-2 run cutting Spalding lead to 2 at 23-21. Sangester pushed the Golden Eagle lead back to 4 at 25-21, with a nice put back off a missed St. Julian three point attempt. A three point play and fast break layup by Brasher extended Spalding’s lead to 9 with 2:26 left in the first. Fontbonne’s Andrew Chism hit jumper cutting the Golden Eagle lead to 7. Brasher nailed a mid range jumper with the shot clock winding down to put Spalding back up 9. Chris McDonald hit two free throws to put Spalding up 11, but a floater at the buzzer cut the Golden Eagle lead to 9 at the half. Spalding had two players in double figures at halftime, Brasher with 12 points and Sangester with 10.

A free throw and Andrew Chism jumper got Fontbonne within 7, but McDonald hit a baseline jumper and transition layup to put the Golden Eagles up 46-35. Fontbonne went on a 12-2 run cutting Spalding’s lead to 1 at 48-47 with 11:19 to play. Thomas Blakemore hit a jumper pushing Spalding’s lead to 3, but Fontebonne responded with a jumper on their next possession. Cutting the Golden Eagles lead to 1 with 8:34 left to play.  Blakemore scored a layup in transition to put Spalding up 52-49 at the 7:43 mark. Fontbonne took the lead on a three pointer, but Spalding regained the lead on a run out layup by Blakemore with 5:05 left. A pair of free throws and a runner by Andrew Chism gave Fontbonne a 3 point lead with 4:03 to play. Tyler St. Julian cut the Fontbonne lead to 1, but the Griffins answered on their next possession to up 3. Spalding tied the game with a free throw by Robert Pittman, and dunk by Brasher.  Robert Pittman made the front in of 1 and 1to give the Golden Eagles a 60-59 lead with 2:15 to play. Blakemore put back an offensive rebound giving Spalding a 3 point lead, but Fontbonne answered with a jumper in the lane to make it 62-61. Sangester hit two clutch free throws to put the Golden Eagles up 3 with 34 seconds remaining to give Spalding the victory. The Golden Eagles next home game is Thursday against Blackburn College at 8:00pm.

Lady Golden Eagles Fall to Fontbonne70-57

The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Fontbonne 70-57 Tuesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. Melinda Leavell led Spalding with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.

Fontbonne jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but a Jessica Guy jumper tied the game at 2 all. Spalding then took the lead 3-2 on a Guy free throw, but the Griffins responded with a jumper to regain a 4-3 lead. On the next possession Melinda Leavell nailed a deep three pointer to regain a 6-4 lead for the Lady Golden Eagles. Fontbonne responded with a 10-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with 13:34 remaining in the first half. A Kerstin Hayes steal resulting in a free throw ended the Fontbonne run, and cut the Griffin lead to 7. Fontbonne pushed their lead back to 9, but two free throws by Kristen Davis and a jumper by Lindsey Roarx made it 16-11 at the 9:52 mark in the first half. Kerstin Hayes hit a runner putting Spalding within 3 at 16-13 with 8:56 left in the first half. Fontebonne extended their lead to five, but a Leavell three and Hannah Washle steal for a layup tied the game at 18. Fontbonne went up 22-18 on consecutive baskets by Chelsey Fremuth forcing coach Just to call a timeout with 4:59 left in the first. Fontbonne extended their lead to 8 until another deep Leavell three cut it to 5 at the 1:20 mark in the first. A Spalding shot clock violation led to a Griffins runner at the buzzer putting Fontbonne up 28-21 at the half. Melinda Leavell led Spalding in the first half with 9 points while going 3 of 5 from behind the arc.

Megan Davis hit a jumper to start the second half, cutting Fontbonne’s lead to 5. Fontbonne responded with a 5-0 run extending their lead to 33-23. Megan Davis hit a three pointer to get Spalding within 7 at 33-26. Fontbonne responded with a 6-0 run extending their lead to 39-26 with 14:24 to play. Melinda Leavell stopped the run with two free throws, but a Fontbonne three on their next possession extended the Griffins lead to 14 at 42-28. Two more Griffin free throws extended their lead to 16 before a Washle three cut it back to 13. A missed layup by LaQuisha Boyd led to a layup by Fontbonne putting the Griffins up 15 with 11:58 to play. Jessica Guy went 1 of 2 from the free throw line to cut Fontbonne’s lead to 14 at 46-32 with 11:11 to play. Washle added another free throw to get Spalding within 13 at 46-33. Fontebonne hit two free throws, but a Leavell jumper kept the Griffins lead at 13. Both teams exchanged free throws until a 5-0 Fontbonne run put the Griffins up 57-39. The Lady Golden Eagles fought back going on a 4-0 run cutting the deficit to 14 at 57-43 with 4:56 to play. Fontbonne would extend their lead to 16 before a Melinda Leavell three pointer cut the Griffins lead to 13, but that’s as close as the Lady Golden Eagles would get falling 70-57. Brasher Tabbed as SLIAC Player of the Week

 

St. Louis, Mo. – The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the men’s and women’s basketball athletes of the week for January 2-8.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Spalding University’s Jametrius Brasher, a junior from Louisville, Ky. (Male), has been named the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 2-8. It marks the second time this season that he has earned the honor.

Brasher, a 6-6 forward, averaged a double-double with 18.6 points and 10.6 rebounds in three games played last week, while also shooting 21-of-31 (.677) from the field and 14-of-16 (.875) from the free throw line. He started the week with a double-double, 16 points and 15 rebounds, in a 70-64 win against Eureka College. Brasher added 18 points on 7-of-9 (.778) shooting from the field and 4-of-4 (1.000) from the charity stripe, while also pulling down six boards in an 84-59 victory over Principia College. He finished the week with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Golden Eagles dropped a 67-62 decision to Webster University.

Gorloks Too Much for Golden Eagles; Spalding Defeats Principia

Men’s Basketball blew past Principia Friday 84-59. Spalding went into halftime with an 11 point lead, and went on to win by 25. One key factor to the victory was a hot shooting night from the field. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 51.7 field goal percentage. Tyler St. Julian led Spalding with 20 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Men’s Basketball lost Saturday at Webster 67-62. The Golden Eagles played well but could not overcome a nightmarish performance from beyond the arc. Spalding had a better field goal percentage than Webster, but only connected on 1 of 16 three point attempts. The Golden Eagles were led another double-double by Jametrius Brasher. Brasher finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. The Golden Eagles next home games are Tuesday January 10th against Fontbonne University at 8:00pm, and Thursday January 12th against Blackburn College at 8:00pm.

Women’s Basketball Go 1-1 in SLIAC Play Over Weekend

Women’s Basketball beat Principia Friday. Spalding took a 15 point lead into halftime and never looked back winning 70-33. The Lady Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Kerstin Hayes. Hayes finished with 21 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 block.    

 The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Webster Saturday. Spalding led at halftime by 6, but the Lady Golden Eagles could not overcome a cold shooting second half losing 62-53. Kerstin Hayes led Spalding with 13 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. The Lady Golden Eagles next home games are Tuesday January 10th against Fontbonne at 6:00pm, and Thursday January 12th against Blackburn College at 6:00pm.

Golden Eagles Top Eureka 70-64

The Golden Eagles got a big win over Eureka College 70-64 Wednesday night with a  game that was back and forth from the beginning, but Spalding pulled it out in the end. The Golden Eagles got big nights from Jametrius Brasher and Thomas Blakemore. Brasher had a double-double scoring 16 and collecting 15 rebounds. Blakemore led all Golden Eagle scorers with 19 points. Spalding’s next home game is January 10th against Fontbonne University at 8:00pm.

A Jametrius Brasher layup put Spalding up 2-0 to start the game. Eureka responded with a slashing layup and jumper to go up 4-2. Quay Hamilton tied the game at 4 with a nice rebound and put back. Eureka went on a 4-0 run, but a two Brasher free throws made the score 8-6 with 14:37 left in the first half. Brasher tied the game at 8 with a layup of an offensive rebound. Eureka took the lead 11-8 on a deep three pointer by Jordan Kindred. Brasher got Spalding back within one with a pair of free throws. Eureka stretched their lead to 3 at 13-10 with two free throws, but a Quay Hamilton put back put Spalding down 1 with 9:43 left in the first half. The teams traded basket until Eureka took a 3 point lead at the 7:55 mark in the first half. Blakemore put Spalding within 1, but Eureka responded with a floater in the lane to go up 19-16. Another Brasher put back and jumper gave Spalding 20-19 lead, but Eureka answered with a jumper to regain the lead 21-20. Blakemore scored 4 straight points to give the Golden Eagles a 24-21 lead, but Eureka tied it at 24 with a three pointer by Austin Nicholas. Two free throws gave Eureka a 26-24 lead, but a Blakemore three pointer from the corner put Spalding up 27-26 with under a minute to play in the first half. A Montray Robertson hook at the buzzer put Spalding up 29-26 at halftime. Jametrius Brasher had a monster first half scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Eureka scored first in the second half with an alley oop to Niko Rivera cutting Spalding’s lead to 1 at 29-28. Blakemore answered with runner on the other end to put Spalding back up 3 at 31-28. A jumper by Eureka cuts Spalding’s lead to 1 at 31-30. Eureka took the lead on a layup, but back to back St. Julian three pointers put the Golden Eagles up 37-32. Eureka went on a 6-3 run cutting Spalding’s lead to 1 at 39-38. A St. Julian block led to a 4-0 Spalding run putting the Golden Eagles up 43-38 with 14:17 left in the second half. Eureka responded with a layup, but a Quay Hamilton three pointer put Spalding up 46-40 at the 13:28 mark. A Chris McDonald free throw and Tyler St. Julian layup extended Spalding’s lead to 9 at 54-45 with 9:09 left in regulation.  Brandon Gabriel hit a jumper in the lane to put Spalding up 56-45, but Eureka responded with a 4-0 run cutting Spalding’s lead to 7 with 6:45 left to play. A nice Gabriel feed to Blakemore for a layup pushed the Golden Eagle lead to 9 at the 5:32 mark. Eureka answered with a 5-0 run to cut Spalding’s lead to 4 with 4:46 left in the game. A Brandon Gabriel three pointer with the shot clock winding down, and St. Julian layup put Spalding up 63-54. Eureka went on a 4-0 run, but a Brasher layup puts Spalding back up 7 with 2:42 left in regulation. A free throw and layup by Mark Lessen put Eureka within 4 with 40.3 seconds to play. Two clutch free throws by Blakemore put Spalding up 67-61 with 37.8 seconds left in the second half. A layup with 27.2 left puts Eureka within 4. Both teams traded free throws, and Spalding prevailed 70-64

Lady Golden Eagles Fall to Eureka 71-58

The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Eureka College 71-58 Wednesday night. Spalding fell behind by 23 before making an outstanding run in the last 5 minutes to cut Eureka’s lead to 11.The key to Spalding’s late run was relentless pressing which forced 15 Eureka turnovers in the second half. Kerstin Hayes led the Lady Golden Eagles with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. The Lady Golden Eagles next home game is January 10th against Fontebonne University at 6pm.

Eureka jumped to an early 9-0 lead, but two Jessica Guy free throws cut Eureka’s lead to 7 at 9-2. Eureka extended their lead with a 4-0 run pushing their lead to 11. Jessica Guy nailed a jumper to cut Eureka’s lead to 9 at 13-4 with 15:03 to play in the first half. Eureka responded with a 7-0 run extending the Red Devils lead to 16 at 20-4. A Megan Davis jumper cut the Golden Eagle deficit to 14 at 20-6 with 10:33 left in the first half. Another 7-0 Red Devils run pushed Eureka’s lead to 27-6. Spalding stopped the run with a three point basket by Kerstin Hayes cutting Eureka’s lead to 18 at 27-9. Eureka went up 35-9, but Spalding ended the half on a 10-4 run cutting Eureka’s lead to 20 at 39-19. Jessica Guy and Lindsey Roarx lead the Lady Golden Eagles at the halftime with four points each.

Both teams exchanged baskets the first three minutes of the second. A Jessica Guy layup cut Eureka’s lead to 18 at 28-46 with 16:26 to play. Eureka responded with a 5-0 run going up 51-28, but a Megan Davis jumper stopped the run cutting Eureka’s lead to 21 at the 15:03 mark. Both teams exchanged baskets over the next 5 minutes, Eureka lead 57-36 with 9:12 left in the second half. Spalding forced Eureka into several turnovers resulting in a 6-3 run cutting Eureka’s lead to 20 with 5:54 left in regulation. A Melinda Leavell three pointer put Spalding within 18 with 4:42 left to play. Kerstin Hayes hit a deep three pointer to get the Lady Golden Eagles within 15 at 54-69 with 2:57 to play. A steal and layup by Jessica Guy cut Eureka’s lead to 13 with 2:11 to play. Tesha Wright’s breakaway layup put Spalding within 11 with 25.1 seconds left in regulation.
