Jessica Guy Named SLIAC Player of the Week for Second Time

Spalding University’s Jessica Guy, a freshman from Louisville, Ky. (Moore), has been named the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 23-29. This marks the second time this season that she has earned the honor.

Guy, a 5-11 forward, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Golden Eagles defeated Westminster College (Mo.), 71-68, to break the Blue Jays’ 30-game regular season win streak. Guy shot 6-of-12 (.500) from the field and 4-of -7 (.571) from the free throw line, while also added one assist and one steal. She added seven points, six rebounds and three steals as well last week in a 60-56 loss to Fontbonne University.

Golden Eagles Fall to Westminster on the Road

Men’s basketball fell to Westminster College this past Saturday 69-55. The game was a close battle until the Blue Jays exploded on a 17-0 run midway through the second half. Thomas Blakemore led Golden Eagle scorers with 13 points.  The offensive explosion was too much for Spalding to overcome and they eventually dropped the conference game by 14. 

Spalding is back at home this Saturday when they take on Principia College.  Game time is 3:00 pm ET.

Hayes/Golden Eagles Snap Westminster’s 30 Game Winning Streak

The Lady Golden Eagles got a huge 71-68 win over Westminster College Saturday afternoon. Spalding handed the Blue Jays their first SLIAC loss since the 2009-2010 season, and snapped their 30 game SLIAC win streak.

The game was close throughout, Westminster led 32-31 at halftime and neither team led by more than 5 points the entire game. The score was even at 68-68 with 8.3 seconds remaining when Kerstin Hayes made the go ahead three point play to give Spalding a 71-68 lead with 2.3 seconds to play. Westminster would get the ball, but were unable to get a final shot off before the buzzer.

Sophomore Jessica Guy came up big for the Lady Golden Eagles recording a double-double. Jessica scored 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.

Brasher’s Double Double Leads Golden Eagles Past Griffins

Spalding beat Fontbonne 49-44 Thursday night in St. Louis. The Golden Eagles had an outstanding night defensively, blocking 6 shots and holding the Griffins to a 30.4 field goal percentage for the game. Jametrius Brasher led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Up next for Spalding is a road game Saturday against the Westminster Blue Jays.

Lady Golden Eagles Fall on the Road to Fontbonne

The Lady Golden Eagles fell to Fontbonne 56-63 Thursday night. An off shooting night and turnovers cost the Lady Golden Eagle the game. Spalding was 16-51 from the field, and committed 22 turnovers. Melinda Leavell led the Lady Golden Eagles with 21 points, while going 5-9 from beyond the three point line.

Cross Country’s New Commit

St. Henry High School track and cross country standout Nathan Mark has committed to continuing his athletic and academic future at Spalding University.

Mark capped off his high school cross country campaign with a 22nd place finish in the class A State Meet, helping the Crusaders secure their 15th KHSAA State Championship in the sport. Mark will also make an impact on the track & field program as he is a state champion on the track as well, hoping to defend the 4x800m title this spring.

Coach Alessandro says, “Nathan is an exceptional student-athlete. He has proven that by performing at the highest level in the classroom, and through sport at St. Henry. We are excited to welcome our first athlete from one of the premiere programs in the state of Kentucky. He will do well here.”

He has personal best times of 17:11 for 5k, 4:39 for 1600m, and 2:05 for 800m. Mark plans to study Occupational Therapy at Spalding University.

Little Giant Invitational Track & Field Results

Spalding Track & Field traveled to Crawfordsville Indiana Saturday to compete in the Wabash Little Giant Invitational. Abram Deng, Kyle Jenkins, and Alec Zaremba were the top performers for the men’s team. Abram finished 2nd in the men’s 3000 meter, Kyle finished 2nd in shot put behind a NCAA Division 2 Championship performer, and Alec finished 5th in the men’s mile. The top performers on the women’s team were Janika King and Krystina Perez. Janika finished 3rd in the women’s 400, and 7th in the women’s 200, while Krystina finished 4th in the women’s high jump. Up next for Spalding Track & Field is a trip to Marion Indiana January 28th to compete in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.

Blakemore Knocks Down Clutch Free Throws to Beat Greenville 74-72

Golden Eagles won a 74-72 thriller over Greenville College Saturday. The Golden Eagles had a nice shooting night connecting on 50% of their field goal attempts. Tyler St. Julian led Spalding scoring 21 points, and grabbing 6 rebounds.  

Greenville got on the scoreboard first with a runner in the lane by Jose Garcia. Thomas Blakemore banked in jumper tying the game at 2-2 on Spalding’s next possession. Greenville went on a 5-0 run jumping to an early 7-2 lead. Tyler St. Julian hit a jumper in transition to make it 7-4 Greenville with 14:58 left in the first. Dominique Sangester’s put back of a missed Blakemore floater put Spalding within one at 8-7 with 13:32 to play. Travis Garrison knocked down a hook in the lane putting Greenville back up three, but Quayshaun Hamilton knocked down a three pointer on Spalding’s next possession giving the Golden Eagles a 10-9 lead. Greenville responded hitting a pair of jumpers sparking an 8-0 run, and taking a 17-10 lead. Jametrius Brasher hit two free throws to get Spalding within five. Greenville would go up nine, but three consecutive three pointers by Brandon Gabriel would tie the game 21-21 with 6:15 left in the first.  The Golden Eagles took the lead on a layup by Montray Robertson, and extended it to four with a nice up and under move by Quayshaun Hamilton. Tyler St. Julian pushed Spalding’s lead to seven when he hit a pull up jumper in the lane, and hit the free throw to complete the three point play. Thomas Blakemore ran off four more points for Spalding extending the Golden Eagles lead to eleven at 32-21 with 3:10 to play in the first. Greenville finally stopped Spalding’s run hitting a jumper at the end of the shot clock, and hitting a contested layup to make it 31-25, but Quayshuan Hamilton would answer with a three pointer to put Spalding up 34-25 at the half. Brandon Gabriel led Spalding at the half with 9 points while going 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Chris McDonald got the scoring going for Spalding in the second half hitting layup in the lane extending Spalding’s lead to eleven. Greenville’s McBride hit a jumper on the Panthers next possession sparking a 4-0 run cutting Spalding’s lead to seven. Spalding responded with a 7-0 run taking a 46-32 lead with 16:37 to play. Greenville hit two free throws to cut it to twelve, but a Blakemore jumper would push it back to fourteen at 48-34. Greenville cut Spalding’s lead back to twelve with another pair of free throws. Greenville would cut Spalding’s lead to nine, but a pair of jumpers by Hamilton and St. Julian would put the Golden Eagles back up thirteen with 10:55 left in the game. Greenville went on an 8-0 run making it 54-49 with 9:09 to play. Thomas Blakemore hit a free throw, and a pair of jumpers to push Spalding to a ten point lead at the 7:13 mark in the second half. Greenville took advantage of trips to the free throw, making four free throws cutting Spalding’s lead to six at 59-53 with 5:11 to play. Greenville scored on a jumper in the lane to cut Spalding’s lead to four, but Tyler St. Julian would answer with two free throws and a jumper to push the Golden Eagles lead back to 8 with 3:39 remaining. Greenville once again responded, hitting a three pointer to make it 63-55. Tyler St. Julian hit the front end of a one and one, but Greenville’s McBride hit a three pointer to make it a three point game. Jametrius Brasher’s jumper put the Golden Eagles up five, but Greenville hit a free throw to get within four. Montray Robertson hit a layup to put Spalding up six, but McBride hit a deep three to cut Spalding’s lead to three. The Golden Eagles answered with a Sangester jumper in the lane, but Jonas McBride hit another three to make it a two point game. Greenville would tie the game with 30 seconds to play, but Tyler St. Julian would retake the lead 72-70 hitting a floater in the lane. Greenville tied the game on a Joe Redmond jumper with 8 seconds left. Thomas Blakemore was sent to the foul line with 3.7 seconds to play, and nailed two clutch free throws putting Spalding up 74-72. Greenville missed a three at the giving Spalding the victory. The Golden Eagles next home game is February 4th at 3:00 pm against Principia College.

Hayes Leads Lady Golden Eagles Past Greenville 57-50

The Lady Golden Eagles were victorious over the Greenville College Panthers Saturday afternoon, winning 57-50. A major key to the game was Spalding’s ability to force turnovers, the Lady Golden Eagles ended the game with 14 steals while forcing Greenville to 26 turnovers. Kerstin Hayes led Spalding with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Spalding scored first taking an early 2-0 lead. Both teams would match each other shot for shot over the next seven minutes. During that span Spalding held the largest lead at 8-5. Greenville would go on a 6-0 run taking the lead 11-8. The Lady Golden Eagles responded with an 8-0 run taking the lead on a Melinda Leavell three, and extending their lead to five with a shot under the basket by Kerstin Hayes. Greenville fought back running off five straight points tying the game 16-16 with 5:13 left in the first half. Laquisha Boyd hit a free throw regaining a one point lead for Spalding, and sparking a 5-0 run putting Spalding up 21-16. Greenville’s Brittani Wolfe stopped the Golden Eagle run with a three pointer from the left corner cutting Spalding’s lead to 2. Greenville took the lead with a free throw and basket by Katelyn Wise. Greenville’s lead didn’t last long; Kerstin Hayes knocked down a pair of three pointers putting the Lady Golden Eagles up 27-22. Kristen Baker hit a free throw with four seconds left in the half sending the Spalding to the locker room with a 28-22 lead. Kerstin Hayes led the Lady Golden Eagles at the half scoring 12 points.

Spalding got things going in the second half forcing two steals for transition layups. Tesha Wright kept it going getting another steal, driving to the basket to hitting a layup, and drawing the foul giving Spalding a 35-22 lead at the 18:05 mark in the second half. Greenville fought back going on a 7-2 run cutting Spalding’s lead to eight at 37-29 with 14:40 left to play. Kerstin Hayes pushed Spalding’s lead back to double digits with driving shot in the lane. Greenville hit two free throws, and three from the corner to cut Spalding’s lead to five at 39-34 with 12:46 left in the second. Kerstin Hayes knocked down two free throws after being fouled driving to the basket pushing Spalding’s lead to seven, but Greenville cut it back to five knocking down a jumper on their next possession. Katie Dennison hit 1 of 2 free throws to put Spalding up 47-38 with 7:28 left to play. Greenville went on a 5-0 run cutting Spalding’s lead to four, but Kerstin Hayes would hit a shot in the lane to put the Golden Eagles up six at 49-43. Greenville would hit two jumpers, and knock down 1 of 2 free throws to put the Panthers within one at 49-48 with 3:38 to play. Melinda Leavell hit a big three pointer from the wing with 2:06 left to put Spalding up 52-48. A flagrant foul on Greenville led two Kerstin Hayes free throws putting Spalding up 54-48 with with 30.4 left in regulation. Kerstin Hayes hit 1 of 2 free throws after a hard on her way to the basket. Greenville would get within five after hitting a jumper in the lane, but Spalding would go on to win 57-50. The Lady Golden Eagles next home game is February 4th at 1:00 pm against Principia College.
