Baseball Holds Conference Lead with Another Sweep

The Spalding University baseball team was on fire coming into this past weekend’s 3 game set with Blackburn, and unfortunately for the Beavers, they could do nothing to stop the Golden Eagle express.  Spalding took all 3 games and did it in dominating fashion.

Spalding took game 1 Saturday in a route defeating Blackburn 21-4.  It was the highest output of the season for the Golden Eagles and their most dominating win to date. Tyler Brown got the win on the mound as he continued his fantastic freshmen season.

In game 2, the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, the Beavers managed to hang a little closer but still could not keep the Golden Eagles from getting the win.  Spalding took game 2, 5-1 as Jake Wardrip picked up where Tyler Brown left off on Saturday and shut down the Beavers.
In game 3, starting pitcher Taylor Reilly turned in one of his best performances of the season as his solid pitching led Spalding to a 9-2 victory and a 3 game sweep of the Beavers.  Reilly capped off 3 consecutive games of solid pitching on the mound and Spalding remained unbeaten in the SLIAC with an 11-0 record.

The Golden Eagles are now on a 9 game winning streak and are 19-7 on the season.  Spalding will be right back in action this afternoon as they face off against MacMurray.  Game 1 is set for a 4pm start.

Baseball Sweeps to Stay Unbeaten in Conference

Coming off a conference opening sweep of Principia College, the Spalding University baseball team traveled this weekend to St. Louis to take on Fontbonne University. With the pitching staff throwing well and the offense beginning to get in their groove, the Golden Eagles looked to stay atop the SLIAC and continue their unbeaten streak; they would do just that.

In game one, freshmen pitcher, Tyler Brown took the mound and once again proved to be one of the best arms in the conference. Coming off his first collegiate shutout, Brown went 7 strong innings, surrendering only 1 run while striking out 8. The offense had a break through scoring 8 runs in the game off the shoulders of Zane Wheatley and Steve Schanz who both belted homeruns. The Golden Eagles would cruise into the victory in game one winning by a score of 8-1.

Game two and three would be a lot closer and would take late rally’s to capture both victories. Once again, the Golden Eagles sent an ace to the mound in Jake Wardrip who recorded his 2nd shutout of the season last week when he defeated Principia College. It was a pitchers battle from the get go with both team going scoreless for the first 5 innings. It was until the top of the 5th when Steven Schanz took a 2-2 fastball over the right field wall, his second homerun of the series which gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. That would be all that Wardrip would need as he once again threw a complete game shutout, giving up only 4 hits and striking out 10. This was the 3rd shutout of Wardrip’s season and the second in a row. “Jake has been absolutely great,” Stawski stated. “He only threw 70 pitches, 70. You cannot be more efficient than that. I am sure Jake would say the same thing but our defense has been great and one of the reasons why we are pitching so well. But my hat is off to Wardrip, he is taking advantage of his senior year.” With Wardrip’s performance the Golden Eagles would capture game two 1-0.

Game 3 would once again see two pitchers lock horns in a battle from the bump. With Spalding down 2-1 in the top of the 6th, the Golden Eagles would rally and manufacture two runs to take the 3-2 lead. After Taylor Reilly went a strong 5 innings, the game was turned over to Zach Stevenson who threw a scoreless 6th and 7th to record the two inning save. The team won the game 3-2 which moved their record to 14-7 overall and a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
