The Spalding men’s basketball team looked to make it a clean sweep over Blackburn as they faced off Saturday in Derek Smith Gymnasium. Earlier in the season, Spalding went into Blackburn’s gym and took a victory, 65-56. To get the win today, the Golden Eagles would have to fend off the Beavers who were looking for payback.
Spalding started the game out by making a concerted effort to get it inside to their bigs, Jemetrius Brasher and Deshawn Curtis. This led to Brasher and Curtis scoring the first 6 points of the game and giving Spalding an early 6-2 lead. With the Spalding lead at 10-7 at the 13 minute mark, Blackburn guard Julian Lott hit back to back shots, with one being from beyond the arc to give the Beavers their first lead, 12-10. Coach Kevin Gray was not happy with his starters play so he subbed in the second team and they immediately made things happen. Boomer Beckley nailed two 3 pointers and Thomas Blakemore buried a jumper to put the Golden Eagles in front, 20-17 at the halfway point of the first half. The Beavers would answer quickly behind a 3 point play by forward Sean Stochl to knot the game back up at 20 but unfortunately for Blackburn, it wouldn’t stay that way for long. Cody Cutsinger converted a layup off a Spalding fast break and that started a 9-0 Spalding run that would be capped off by Johnell Hardin’s jumper at the 3 minute mark to make it 29-20 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Blackburn was held without a field goal for 6 minutes until guard Ira Williams found the bottom of the net at the 2 minute mark to cut Spalding’s lead back to 7, 30-23. The first half ended with a couple of great sequences from the Golden Eagles. Jametrius Brasher emphatically blocked a Blackburn jumper and that led DeWhon McAfee on a break-a-way who fed a behind the back pass to Cody Cutsinger for an easy layup. McAfee wasn’t finished with great plays though as he buried a 3 pointer as the clock expired and Spalding took a 35-23 lead into halftime. Jametrius Brasher and Boomer Beckley led Spalding in the first half with 6 points each while Blackburn was led by Sean Stochl who put in 6 points and 6 rebounds.
The second half kicked off with Blackburn fighting to get back into the game. The Beavers scored 4 unanswered points to quickly cut the Spalding lead to under 10. Following a Julian Lott jumper and a Brandon Williams layup, the Golden Eagles lead was only 6, 39-33. While Blackburn chipped away, Spalding couldn’t find the basket. The Golden Eagles suffered a 3 minute drought beginning around the 16 minute mark. Labrice Williams finally made a pair of free throws to put points on the board for Spalding and push the lead back to 8, 41-33 with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Blackburn didn’t go away though and following a Brandon Williams 3 point play, the Spalding lead was only 3, 41-38. But as soon as the lead was cut down, a light went off for the Golden Eagles as DeWhon McAfee nailed two jumpers, one from beyond the arc and Cody Cutsinger converted an easy layup to finish off a 7-0 run and push the lead back to 10, 48-38. Julian Lott finally stopped the bleeding for Blackburn by hitting an open 3 pointer at the 7 minute mark to get the lead back down to 7, 48-41. However, it seemed that the 7-0 run crushed the spirit of the Beavers as Spalding dominated the game from that point on. Following back to back 3’s from McAfee and Cutsinger, the lead had ballooned to 19, 65-46 with less than 3 minutes to play. The Beavers never threatened to get any closer in the final minutes and Spalding won their 6th straight game defeating Blackburn, 71-52.
The Golden Eagles were led in victory by DeWhon McAfee with 16 points while Cody Cutsinger scored 14 and Jemetrius Brasher scored 12. Julian Lott led Blackburn with 20 points while Sean Stochl chipped in 9 points and 10 rebounds. With the win Spalding improved to 13-7 on the season while Blackburn fell to 4-16 with the loss. Next up for the Golden Eagles will be a road trip to Webster University on February 11th. Game time is set for an 8pm tip.
